A Level 2 charger cuts your EV charging time from 40+ hours (on a regular outlet) to 4–8 hours overnight. Installing one in a Fresno home is usually straightforward — but not always. Here's what to expect on price, permits, and picking the right hardware.
What a Level 2 install actually costs in Fresno
For an attached garage with the panel on the same wall or nearby, a Level 2 install runs $650–$1,200 including permit. For homes where the panel is on the opposite side of the house from the garage, or where the garage is detached, it's $1,400–$2,800 depending on the trench or attic run required. The charger hardware itself is separate — plan on $400–$800 for a good unit.
Hardwired vs. plug-in (NEMA 14-50)
You have two options for how the charger connects:
- Hardwired: The charger is permanently wired to the circuit. Cleaner look, slightly better efficiency, and required for chargers above 40 amps continuous.
- Plug-in (NEMA 14-50): The charger plugs into a 240V outlet like a welder receptacle. Easier to replace or take with you when you move. Newer NEC codes require GFCI protection on these, which adds cost.
For most Fresno homeowners staying in the house, hardwired is the better long-term choice. For renters or short-term owners, plug-in makes sense.
Do you need a panel upgrade?
Sometimes. A typical Level 2 charger draws 40 amps continuous (50-amp breaker). If your existing 100-amp or 125-amp panel is already loaded with an AC, electric water heater, and other big loads, you may need either a panel upgrade or a load management device. We check the panel calculation as part of the free-quote walkthrough before we ever propose an upgrade.
PG&E rebates and the EV time-of-use rate
As of 2026, PG&E's EV2-A rate offers off-peak rates around $0.32/kWh vs peak rates over $0.60/kWh. Charging your car between midnight and 3 pm can cut your charging cost roughly in half. This is a bigger financial win than most rebates and the switch is free through your PG&E account.
Rebates come and go — as of writing, the state has active rebates for Level 2 chargers for income-qualified households through CALeVIP and utility programs. We'll flag which you qualify for at quote time.
Permit and inspection in Fresno
The City of Fresno permit for a residential EVSE circuit runs $80–$140 and turns around in 1–3 business days. Inspection is next-business-day. The whole install, from permit to inspection sign-off, is typically a two-week calendar window with one day of actual work in your garage.
Which charger should you buy?
The chargers we install most in Fresno homes: Tesla Wall Connector (if you're all-Tesla), ChargePoint Home Flex (best all-around), Grizzl-E Classic (reliable, no app), and Emporia (good value with monitoring). Avoid any charger under $300 without a UL listing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing a 30-amp circuit for a charger that can draw 40 — you'll be limited forever on that charger
- Using aluminum conductors for the branch circuit (permitted, but not what we'd choose)
- Skipping the permit — this comes up when you sell the house
- Buying the charger before the electrician has looked at your panel
Half the EV charger 'problems' we get called out to are actually the wrong circuit for the charger. Talk to us before you buy hardware, not after — it's a 10-minute conversation that saves the wrong purchase.
